5 Foods You Should Avoid for Clear Skin

Besides the typical stress and genetics reasons why you may have acne, believe it or not, your diet plays a huge role as well in why you may be breaking out at this very second. There are foods that help you get clearer skin, while others will do the complete opposite.

Are you craving to find out more? Read below for the top 5 foods you should probably cut out from your diet:

1. Bread
Oh the evil-but ‘oh-so-delicious-cant-get-rid-off’ devil food. Bread in general is not very good for you and even worse, it may be the underlying trigger to your acne problems!

Bread contains gluten, which causes increases in systemic inflammation. Gluten is a protein found in grains that some people have difficulty breaking down. And when a food is harder for the body to digest, the more likely it is to cause fermentation, an overgrowth of bad bacteria and poor gut health – all of which are linked to acne.

2. Chocolate
Another - “can’t give up” type food. Good news - you don’t have to give up ALL chocolate; dark chocolate is a great alternative. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants and is much lower in sugar than milk chocolate.

3. Chips
Are you surprised? Potato chips are one of the most popular junk foods in the United States. But chips not only fried in greasy oils and lack almost all vitamins and minerals, but sadly might be the secret to causing your acne to appear. Why? Chips contain carbs, produce a quick insulin spike and lead to systemic inflammation. They are also high in omega-6 fats, which are not the best thing for your body.

4. Milk
Milk is high in calcium but if you have acne, you might want to rethink your options. It’s said that dairy can cause a spike in testosterone that causes downstream effects leading to a breakout.

5. Soda
Soda is one of the worst food or drink in the standard American diet; it is not good for you. While soda is high with fructose, soda is entirely lacking of any nutrients. Soda is almost as worse as alcohol; as they both damage your body. Try going for water instead of soda the next time you want to drink something.

Generally Overall Saturated Fat should be avoided. This includes burgers, pizza, fried chicken, the list goes on. Yes, it blows, but overall these foods are not good for your skin, let alone body. A recent study found that people with severe acne consumed more saturated fat than those with clear skin or mild acne.

The bottom line is you should stick to whole-food, low-sugar diet in order to eliminate acne and to overall keep a healthy body. Remember to always consume at least 8 glasses of water a day and to exercise regularly.
